Giuseppe Cataldo began his musical career as a kettledrummer, percussionist and jazz drummer, and alongside this, in his capacity as a composer, performer and conductor, has considerable and highly varied experience. Apart from the traditional classical repertory, this ranges from jazz to minimalism, from historic 20th Century pieces to neo-romanticism, and includes record production.

At the beginning he carried out extensive work for the R.C.A record label in the field of popular music. Following this, he was involved predominantly in jazz and this led him to work with top-level musicians from Italy and abroad: Gil Evans, John Lewis, Tony Scott, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ernie Wilkins, Bob Brookmeyer, Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers, Francy Boland, Toots Thielemans, Paul Jeffrey and, as regards Italians, Flavio Boltro, Danilo Terenzi and Renato Sellani among others.

1982 He graduated with first-class honours in Percussion Instruments. In the same year, and for a period of about 20 years thereafter, he began his work as kettledrummer and percussionist with various Italian and foreign orchestras, the “Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana” and the “Teatro Massimo di Palermo” among them.


1982 He graduated in Choral Music and Choir Conducting at the prestigious “V. Bellini Conservatory” in his city. In this year, he was able to take part in the National Timpanist’s Contest held by the “Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra”.


1988 In his role as conductor and Artistic Director he oversaw, for C.R Records, a recorded collection of the most recent works of young contemporary composers (Sollima, La Licata, Caruso, Modestini and Cataldo himself) all included on the album “Sincronie”.


1989 In his role as composer and arranger he oversaw, for Splash Records two record album called “Picture Number One” and “Picture Number Two”.


1990 Since this year, he has dedicated his time to conducting symphonic works and opera.


1990-1996 He held the position of Artistic Director and Music Director of the “Palermo Chamber Orchestra”.


1995 Graduated in conducting at the Musical Academy in Pescara.


1995-1997 He worked with the “Opera Lirico laboratory” – Ars Nova, and with the “Opera Laboratory”, istitutions both sustained by the Palermo City Council, and during which time he conducted Domenico Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto and Gaetano Donizetti’s Il Campanello.


1999-2000 He was a member of the panel of judges of the 9th edition of the Gino Contilli International Composition Contest in Messina in 1999.

He was also on the panel for the “New Opera for Prague 2000” International Composition Contest held by the Prague State Opera, and also for the 6th Mario Gusella international Conducting Contest held by the Musical Academy of Pescara.


1998-2001 He has held the position as Music Artistic Director of The Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra.


2008-2009 He has held for the second time the position as Music Artistic Director of The Sicilian Symphonic Orchestra.
